United Religions Initiative

Members of Interfaith Community Church created a United Religions Initiative (URI) Cooperation Circle in preparation for the signing of the URI Charter in 2000.

Our United Religions Initiative Cooperation Circle is called: Interfaith Circle of Love.

This followed a year of dedicated Peacebuilding culminating in a worldwide 72 hour Peace Vigil at the turn of the millennium. On this occassion we kept our doors open for three days, offered scheduled and unplanned activities, locally and globally linked.

Some of these activities included a reading of the URI Charter, a 'Circle of Prayer for Peace' New Year's Eve walk around Green Lake, a 4:00AM drumming experience, continuous dialogue and prayer... this event had a tremendously bonding effect for those who participated.

While some fled the city expecting a millennial catastrophe, we invested in one another, our community, and applied a concerted effort toward Peacebuilding which continues to this day.

We join with other Cooperation Circles around the world.

The United Religions Initiative Interfaith Cooperation Circles (CCs) are the heart of United Religions Initiative. Each is independently organized, self-governing and self-funding, they build cooperation among people of all faiths and traditions to address the most pressing issues facing their collective communities, including poverty, religiously motivated violence, environmental degradation and more.

We co-create two major public gatherings each year through our United Religions Initiative Interfaith Circle of Love Cooperation Circle;

Annual fall Interfaith Worship Celebration where we bring at least nine faith traditions together for a service of celebration near the Thanksgiving holiday. We co-create this gathering with The Interfaith Network who first began this interfaith gathering 23 years ago. This gathering is held in the worship space of a local spiritual community. For the last six years it has been held at St. Patrick Church. It has also been held at University Congregation United Church of Christ, Seattle First Baptist Church, and Center for Spiritual Living.

Walking Meditation for Compassion and Peace ~ New Year's Eve at Green Lake. This is an outdoor public gathering where nine faith and spiritual traditions are represented and musicians offer music and song. Following short prayers by representatives we take a one hour contemplative walk around the Green Lake. We also co-create this gathering with The Interfaith Network.

We make an attempt to involve as many communities as possible in both of these public gatherings.
